Overview

If you're aiming to become a solicitor in the UK, you'll need to pass the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).

  • Start by registering for an SQE candidate account, which you can do at any point throughout the year. Booking for SQE1 and SQE2 closes approximately five weeks before the assessment sitting.

  • The first part of the assessment, SQE1, tests your knowledge of core legal principles and is usually a prerequisite for booking the second part (SQE2).

  • SQE1 is held twice a year, in January and July. The SQE1 assessment window is usually on the third week of the month.

  • For those taking the SQE1 outside of the UK, it's essential to verify the specific exam times as they can vary in international centres. As an added option, you can choose to take the SQE1 in Welsh.

You can find the upcoming scheduled assessment dates for SQE1, along with the cut off date for examinable law and practice below. All times provided are in UK time - international candidates should verify local timings when booking.

Registration Process

The registration process for the SQE involves three steps:

  1. Register at the SQE website with the SRA and Kaplan. You must provide valid photo ID (passport, driving license, or government ID).
  2. Complete pre-booking requirements. Submit the diversity survey (optional), declare any SQE exemptions, and request reasonable adjustments if needed for your exams.
  3. Book your computer-based SQE1 exam. After registration and pre-booking, log into your SQE account to view available test centers worldwide. Select your preferred location and secure your booking.

Note: While both exams require separate pre-booking, you must pass SQE1 before booking SQE2 unless exempt.

Pleased to share that I have successfully passed the SQE1 exam on 1st attempt. With SQE2 exempted, I’m now one step closer to getting enrolled as a Solicitor of England and Wales! Would like to thank my seniors, colleagues, mentors and friends for all the support during this grueling journey. This is one of the most difficult bar exams in the world to undertake, especially alongside a full time job! So happy to help out any aspirant who may be reading this message! I had prepared from the University of Law SQE Manuals and the AI powered MCQ bank from PastPaperHero.
